Application Notes: Component Testing
Many times it is important to check the quality of processed parts
and to do an audit or a lot check to make sure that component parts
are meeting the proper required quality and results prior to being
sent along to the next phase of production or assembly.
Such was the case for this weld force tester checking stand.
Periodically a piece was pulled off production or a new lot piece was tested
to determine and validate that the friction weld process for assembly of plastic
dash components was yielding adequate results and achieving the desired strengths
to hold the parts together.
A test setup was built to achieve a destructive pull test of parts friction
welded together. They actually tested and recorded the force needed to pull
back apart the welded component parts.
This test set up used a general purpose load cell, Model 3132 for this test,
in line with an actuator that would then do a destructive pull test on a sample
piece of the plastic friction welds of component parts.
If there was force that was below the determined “good”
status then there may need to reject a lot of parts and then adjustments
made to the assembly or production line to insure quality improvements.
