Unamplified load cells and pressure sensors as 'simple apparatus'
Unamplified load cells and pressure sensors as ‘simple apparatus’
In certain hazardous locations it is acceptable to use a sensor that complies with the requirements of ‘simple apparatus’.
The definition of a ‘simple apparatus’ is a sensor or device that does not generate or store more than the following:
1.2 V
100 mA
20 µJ
25 mW
This type of device does not need certification from a third party. Even though a device is considered a ‘simple apparatus’, it must be connected to an intrinsic safety barrier.
Many Sensotec unamplified load cells and pressure sensors can be considered ‘simple apparatus’ and are in compliance with the requirements of ATEX 94/9/EC(100a) and ATEX 1999/92/EC(137). Contact your local representative for compliance details on a particular model and configuration.
Where a ‘simple apparatus’ forms part of an apparatus containing other electric circuits, the combination of apparatus shall be considered as a whole. ‘Simple apparatus’ is required to be clearly identified when it is installed and it is the responsibility of the system design authority to obtain, where necessary, certification of any system in which the product may be used.
